hurricane ike
September 25, 2008
We’re off-line due to damage from Hurricane Ike passing through our part of Indiana with 75 mph winds from 11 am to 4 pm.
I’ll post again as soon as the internet is back up!

a goal reached
September 11, 2008
During last Friday’s walk, I reached one of my goals. 2 1/2 years ago I decided to memorize the Westminster Shorter Catechism. I finally did it. All 107 questions and answers!
Now I just need to remember to keep remembering it!

catching up and cleaning up
September 9, 2008
What a week!
We made a list of everything that needs to be done before the end of the year. There isn’t enough time or money to do it all, but at least we know what needs to be done.
I gave the chicken coop a thorough cleaning and hosing down last Wednesday. The girls weren’t too pleased with the intrusion. Normally I just rake out the old bedding and put in fresh. This time I raked it all out, hosed down the coop, and put in fresh green stuff. The Balfour yard still needs to be done. We are consistently getting eggs now. They are small bantam eggs, but we’ve gotten used to that.
The bunny barn now has fencing over the yard. We won’t have to worry as much about intruders this winter. It still needs a Fall cleaning.
We’ve starting clearing out finished garden beds. I planted a bit more kale, some garlic, and some lettuce. I’m hoping they have time to grow. They are predicting an early frost for us this year (sometime this month instead of November). We have grown a lot of food this year, a lot of seed, and preserved 5 metal shelving units full of food. Oh my . . . I still have to pick pumpkins, winter squash, sunflowers, tomatoes, horseradish, Brussels’ sprouts, potaotes, apples, and persimmons. I figure that will fill at least another couple of shelving units.
The guys are still working on the tree. It looks like is will provide a great deal of firewood and kindling. It is slow work though since they have a million other things to do too. HM is marking the trunks of several other dead trees this week. Maybe after the frost CK and MA will have time to get them down. One of the million other things they have been doing is getting the yard ready for Fall. There is a massive clean up under way.
I made a baby afghan for Mary’s newest granddaughter. Now I am making one to keep me warm this winter. I have another baby afghan to do after I finish mine. Then I think I’ll knit some socks or mittens. HM hasn’t had much time to do any sort of sewing. She is busy picking up my slack.
Gotta run – - - work is calling. It just doesn’t seem to stop this time of year.

dog vs skunk
September 1, 2008
I think the skunk won.
Guess what we’ve been dealing with since Sunday morning. Yep. A dog that thought a skunk looked like a fun toy. Poor Ginny. She is only minorly offensive now, but Sunday morning it was so bad my eyes hurt! 2 soap baths, 2 tomato baths, and a good soaking haven’t completely wiped out the smell.
